| Making this cloth was a labour of love. It
was my parents' Christmas present not too long after I had started
making lace. The cloth is 42cm x 42 cm square and it took about 350
hours work. A reasonable estimate is that it takes an hour to make
a square inch of this kind of lace, including winding bobbins and
sewing up. If I were to make another cloth from the same pattern I
doubt it would take me much less time. I would be quicker at moving
the bobbins but I would lack the enthusiasm to complete so many repeats
which would slow me down. The sewing up alone took ten hours. |

The cloth is worked in three
sections, a central square which uses 39 pairs of bobbins, a straight-edged
border with 46 pairs and an outer border which takes 28 pairs. I
worked it in DMC Coton a Machine 30 with Perle No. 12 for the gimp.
